J&K Police detain Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz in Srinagar ahead of protest rally

Srinagar, Dec 15 (IBNS): Jammu and Kashmir Police, on Friday, detained Hurriyat Conference Chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq after he tried to come out from his residence in Srinagar to proceed towards South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had called for a Jalsa in Anantnag on Friday; however, authorities imposed curfew in the district and blocked internet while it also imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar.

Reports said that Mirwaiz who is under house detention tried to come out from his residence Nigeen but -- police deployed in large numbers outside his residence -- foiled his attempt and detained him.

Earlier in a tweet, Mirwaiz wrote “Will defy house arrest today at 12.30 and try to march towards Islambad as per the programme of JRL to show solidarity with the people of south Kashmir who continue to bear the severe brunt of occupation!”
