PM Modi invited to Dhaka as BNP’s Tarique Rahman set to take oath on Feb 17
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been formally invited to attend the oath-taking ceremony of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman, who is set to be sworn in as the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh on February 17, a development being closely watched in New Delhi and across South Asia, media reports said.
According to NDTV's sources, the invitation was extended as part of a broader diplomatic outreach by Bangladesh’s interim administration ahead of the high-profile ceremony in Dhaka.
While Prime Minister Modi is unlikely to attend due to prior commitments in Mumbai with French President Emmanuel Macron on the same day, India is expected to be represented at a senior level, possibly by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar or Vice President C P Radhakrishnan.
The oath ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Southern Plaza of the Bangladesh Parliament House.
The programme will begin with the swearing-in of newly elected Members of Parliament, followed by the prime minister's and the new cabinet's oath-taking.
The oath to Tarique Rahman is expected to be administered by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin.
The invitation to Prime Minister Modi is being seen as a significant signal, given the history and strategic depth of India–Bangladesh relations.
Past BNP administrations have had complex relations with India, but recent statements from party leaders have emphasised cooperation, trade, connectivity, and regional stability.
Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, Muhammad Yunus, has invited heads of government from 13 countries, including India, China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey and several South and Southeast Asian nations, underlining the regional and international attention surrounding the transition.
