Vijay meets Tamil Nadu Governor, stakes claim to form next government with Congress support

Southern superstar-turned-politician Vijay, on Wednesday, met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and staked a claim to form the next government in Tamil Nadu, days after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, emerged as the single largest outfit, ending the rule of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Despite securing the highest number of seats, TVK fell short of a clear majority.

The party won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly and requires 10 more to cross the majority mark of 118.

Vijay will now have to prove his majority on the floor of the House.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress, which was allied with the outgoing DMK government, has reportedly extended support to TVK.

However, even with Congress’s five seats, the party remains short of the majority mark.

Party sources told The Tribune that Vijay is likely to take oath as Chief Minister on May 7.

In the Assembly elections, DMK secured 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 47.

Other parties, including PMK (4), IUML (2), CPI (2), VCK (2), and CPI(M) (2), also registered smaller tallies.

The BJP, DMDK, and AMMK won one seat each.

DMK, AIADMK falter

The DMK, despite being in power, managed only 59 seats, while the AIADMK-BJP alliance secured 47, reflecting a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

Tamil Nadu has traditionally witnessed alternating governments between the DMK and AIADMK.

However, the rise of TVK as the single largest party signals a potential disruption of this long-standing two-party dominance.
