O'Romeo thrives on silence and unsaid emotions: Shahid Kapoor; Triptii Dimri calls it a dream come true

Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri open up about collaborating with filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj in O'Romeo, discussing its intense romantic world, emotionally layered performances, and the challenges of portraying love, transformation and unspoken desire. The film releases on February 13, on the eve of Valentine’s Day. IBNS-TWF correspondent Souvik Ghosh notes their thoughts from the promotional trail.

Shahid Kapoor

Q. What has changed for you and Vishal Bhardwaj since the last time you worked together?

A. Every collaboration with Vishal-sir is an adventurous and slightly crazy journey. When I worked with him for the first time, I was extremely intimidated and honestly felt undeserving of being part of his film. Today, I feel fortunate to be included in his filmography. Every time we work together, we create something fresh, unique and cinematic. The journey is always new, difficult and challenging — but that’s exactly how an actor matures.

Q. How would you describe this film?

A. Every film has its own world, and O'Romeo exists in a completely unique romantic space. The romance in the film carries multiple layers, including an unrequited love story. At its core, it’s about how a woman transforms a dangerous man.

Q. You have romanced several leading actresses over the decades. How was Triptii Dimri as an on-screen partner?

A. It was wonderful doing this love story with her. O'Romeo is a very specific kind of romantic film — it thrives on silence and unsaid emotions. Triptii has delivered a brilliant performance, and this might well be the best of her career so far. Working with her was an amazing experience.

Q. What was your reaction when Vishal Bhardwaj approached you for the film?

A. It wasn’t easy, I won’t lie. But Vishal-sir guided me throughout the process. I was filled with excitement when I was offered the role because he has always been one of the top directors I dreamt of working with. With O'Romeo, one of my most beautiful dreams has materialised, and that makes me extremely happy.

Q. Your role in O'Romeo is intense and explores love, lust and envy. How challenging was it to portray?

A. It was both exciting and challenging. I was fortunate to have the support of Vishal-sir, Shahid and Avinash (Avinash Tiwary). I honestly don’t think I could have pulled it off without my co-actors. I also underwent workshops with Atul Mongia-sir, who helped me understand the depth of my character. It has been a brilliant journey — an experience every actor should go through.
