Asian gold medallist boxer Dingko Singh dies at 42
NewDelhi/IBNS: Asian Games Gold medal-winning boxer Dingko Singh breathed his last on Thursday. He was 42.
The boxer had been battling liver cancer since 2017.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on the demise of the Manipur-based pugilist.
"Shri Dingko Singh was a sporting superstar, an outstanding boxer who earned several laurels and also contributed to furthering the popularity of boxing. Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti," PM Modi tweeted.

Sports minister Kiren Rijiju also condoled the death of the boxer.
"I'm deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Dingko Singh. One of the finest boxers India has ever produced, Dinko's gold medal at 1998 Bangkok Asian Games sparked the Boxing chain reaction in India. I extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved family. RIP Dinko," Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju wrote in his tweet.

India's first Olympic-medallist in boxing Vijender Singh also tweeted his condolence message: "My sincerest condolences on this loss May his life's journey & struggle forever remain a source of inspiration for the upcoming generations. I pray that the bereaved family finds the strength to overcome this period of grief & mourning #dinkosingh."

Dingko Singh was working with Indian Navy.
He won his first Asian Games gold in 1998. He was conferred the Arjuna Award the same year.
Singh was awarded Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to Indian boxing.
He had turned to coaching after retiring from active sports.
