Indian Women, for the first time, enter Olympics hockey semi final
Tokyo/IBNS: Gritty Indian women rose to the occasion to enter the semifinals of Tokyo Olympics hockey, upsetting three-time champions Australia 1-0 Monday.
The all important goal was scored by drag flicker Gurjit Kaur, who converted a penalty corner in the 22nd minute.
This is the best performance by Indian women in the Olympics so far.
Earlier in 1980 during the Moscow Olympics, they finished fourth in the six- team round robin league.
Facing the mighty opponent, who were rated favorites to win the title, India held their nerves.
After a drag flicker, Gurjit Kaur put India ahead successfully by converting the penalty corner.
Stung by the reverse, the Aussies forced a series of raids but failed to beat the plucky Indian defense.
Australia forced as many as seven penalty corners but failed to convert any of those chances.
India will meet Argentina in the last-four stage on Aug 4.
