Mohali/IBNS: Jasprit Bumrah (3/21) and Gerald Coetzee's (3/32) superb spells coupled with a scintillating 78-run knock from Surya Kumar Yadav helped Mumbai Indians (MI) edge Punjab Kings (PBKS) by nine runs in a last-over thriller at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mohali on Thursday.

PBKS skipper Sam Curran won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Punjab Kings started off well again as Kagiso Rabada struck early to dismiss Ishan Kishan.

Suryakumar Yadav, though, arrived and went on the attack straightaway.

At the other end, Rohit Sharma looked in good touch as he cracked a couple of fours and sixes inside the Powerplay.

The duo kept chipping away the runs and brought up the 50-run stand in the ninth over.

Suryakumar took up the mantle of acceleration and also unleashed his favourite 'Supla' shot as he brought up his fifty off just 34 balls.

The 81-run partnership between Rohit and Surya broke as Sam Curran took the wicket of Rohit Sharma (36 off 25).

Surya's 78 and Tilak Verma's 18-ball 36 knock helped MI to score 192 for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs.

For PBKS, Harshal Patel took 3 wickets, Sam Curran got 2 wickets and Rabada took 1.

Defending 193, MI got off to a splendid start, reducing PBKS to 14/4 inside the first three overs.

Mumbai Indians survived a splendid Ashutosh Sharma (61 off 28) blitz as Coetzee took his crucial wicket in the 18th over.

PBKS were bowled out for 183 and MI registered their third victory in IPL 2024 by 9 runs.

Besides Bumrah and Coetzee's three-wicket hauls, Akash Madhwal, Shreyas Gopal and skipper Hardik Pandya took 1 wicket each for MI.

Mumbai Indians will play their next match against table-topper Rajasthan Royals on Apr 22, while Punjab Kings will take on Gujarat Titans on Apr 21.
