US Open: Anderson ends Murray's hope, Federer, Wawrinka rolls on

New York, Sept 8 (IBNS) Kevin Anderson, the world number 14 pulled up a major upset as he played some scintillating tennis to beat Andy Murray and set up a quarterfinal berth, here on Monday.

The 6ft 8in South African took the first 2 sets 7(7)-6(5), 6-3 before Murray rallied hard in the third to keep his hope alive. Murray’s 7(7)-6(2) third set win was short lived as he conceded the next 5-7 to crash out of the Grand Slam.

Anderson, by virtue of his win will meet Stan Wawrinka in the round of eight.

Wawrinka beat D Young 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the next round.

In another encounter, Roger Federer defeated J Isner 7(7)-6(0), 7(8)-6(6), 7-5 to move on to the quarters as he inches closer towards the title.

In the Women’s Singles category, Simona Halep came from behind to edge past her German counterpart Sabine Lisicki 6(6)-7(8), 7-5, 6-2 to book a quarterfinal clash with the former world number one, Victoria Azarenka.

Fifth seeded Petra Kvitova set up her quarterfinal berth by taking on J Konta 7-5, 6-3, and will face Flavia Pennetta of Italy in the next round.

Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea won their Men’s Doubles clash with D Nestor and E Roger-Vasselin 6(4)-7(7), 6-4, 6-3 to move on to the quarters.

Bopanna also won his Mixed Doubles match with his partner Y Chan of Taipei 7(9)-6(7), 5-7, (13)-(11) against S Hsieh and H Kontinen to set up a match against fellow Indian Leander Peas and his Swiss partner Martina Hingis, who for the second successive time received a walkover from their opponent to advance to the next round.
