West Indies secured a Super 6 spot with a convincing victory in a must-win match against hosts Malaysia at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

Victory for either side in Bayuemas would bring the prize of third place in Group A and Windies got the job done by a margin of 53 runs.

India face Sri Lanka in the final group stage game of the tournament to determine who finishes top of the group.

Malaysia tighten the screw

Having been asked to bat first, the West Indies did not have it all their own way and found runs hard to come by in the early stages at Bayuemas Oval.

They eked out 37 runs for the loss of one wicket in the first 10 overs of their innings. Nur Dania Syuhada, Suabika and Marsya bowled accurately and were backed up well in the field.

Opener Asabi Callendar was the first to find fluency and struck four fours in a crucial innings of 30, before Jahzara Claxton crashed a quick 19 to raise her side to 119 for seven.

West Indies attack run riot

The hosts offered stubborn resistance in the early part of the run chase with opener Nuni lasting seven overs and scoring one run from 22 balls.

Malaysia collapsed from 38 for three, losing seven wickets for nine runs.

The West Indies spinners wreaked havoc with skipper Samara Ramnath taking four wickets for six runs, Erin Deane two for seven and Naijanni Cumerbatch two for 14.
