More than 23,000 Pakistanis held in prisons abroad

Pakistan's  Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights was recently informed on Tuesday that over 23,000 nationals from the South Asian country are currently languishing in foreign prisons.

Those present in the foreign prisons also include more than 15,000 convicts.

The foreign ministry presented data on Pakistani prisoners abroad during a meeting, chaired by Waleed Iqbal, reported The Express Tribune.

According to the data, 23,456 Pakistani citizens were imprisoned in foreign countries, including 15,587 convicts and 7,869 under-trial prisoners, the newspaper reported.

The highest number of Pakistani prisoners are currently present in  Saudi Arabia, where 12,156 are languishing in different jails.

This is followed by 5,292 prisoners at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) jails, the newspaper reported.

Data showed 706 Pakistanis are also currently present in Pakistani prisons.
