Over 130 killed as 7.5 earthquake hits Afghanistan, tremors felt in Pakistan, north India

In India, the earthquake was felt in several parts of India including Delhi, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab.

The quake had its epicentre in the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan. Major tremors were even felt in Pakistan.

The IMD website said the epicentre of the quake is located at latitude 36.5 degrees north and longitude 70.8 degrees east.

The IMD called the intensity of the quake, which occurred at 14:39, as 'great'.

In Pakistan, more than 100 people have been killed by the quake.

At least 18 people, including 12 school children, have been killed and 140 others were injured in Afghanistan.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to President of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and expressed his sympathies and condolences at the damage caused by the earthquake.

"Just spoke to President Ashraf Ghani and expressed my sympathies and condolences at the damage caused by the earthquake," Modi said.

"President Ashraf Ghanii shared with me his initial assessment of the damage. I offered all possible assistance," he said.

"President Ashraf Ghani told me due to the quake a school building collapsed and children lost their lives. I was very pained to hear of this," Modi said.

"When President Ashraf Ghani was telling me about the school, my mind went back to a similar tragedy in Anjar, Kutch in 2001. Felt very sad", the Prime Minister said.

Modi also spoke to Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and took stock of the situation arising due to the earthquake.

"Spoke to J&K CM Shri Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and took stock of the situation arising due to the unfortunate earthquake," the Prime Minister said.

People rushed out of offices and homes in Delhi as well as in Chandigarh.

Metro services were temporarily halted in the national capital.

In Srinagar, phone and electricity lines are down.
