Gujarat gets power surge: Hitachi Energy’s Rs.2,000 cr plant to generate 1,000 jobs

| @indiablooms | Jun 12, 2026, at 04:23 pm

Hitachi Energy, a global leader in electrification, has announced an investment of approximately ₹2,000 crore to establish a new Large Power Transformer (LPT) manufacturing facility in Karjan, Vadodara, Gujarat.

The project is expected to generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, contributing to local economic development and skill enhancement in the region.

The investment follows a recent announcement made by Hitachi Energy India Limited during its FY26 Q4 results and reflects the company’s continued expansion of its manufacturing footprint in India.

With over 77 years of presence in the country, the company said the new facility will help meet rising demand for electricity infrastructure in India and global markets.

Growing demand for power infrastructure

According to a report by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), India will require investments of around ₹7.93 lakh crore in transmission infrastructure to integrate over 900 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy by 2035.

Against this backdrop, demand for large power transformers is expected to rise significantly, driven by grid expansion, data centre growth, renewable energy integration, and industrial electrification.

The new factory is expected to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity and support India’s push towards energy self-reliance under the “Make in India” initiative.

Manufacturing and technology capabilities

Scheduled for completion in FY28, the state-of-the-art facility will produce a significant volume of power transformers annually, supporting applications such as high-voltage transmission, HVDC systems, power generation, AI data centres, and large-scale industrial infrastructure.

The facility will complement Hitachi Energy India Limited’s existing manufacturing base in Gujarat, Mysuru, and Halol, which includes power, distribution, traction transformers, and insulation component production units.

The Vadodara plant will be developed as a fully digital, LEED-certified facility with a focus on energy efficiency, sustainable operations, and reduced environmental impact. It will integrate smart manufacturing systems and end-to-end digital connectivity to enable data-driven production and improved quality and productivity.

Company statement

“This investment reflects our confidence in India’s energy future and the country’s growing stature as a strategic manufacturing base,” said N. Venu, Managing Director & CEO, Hitachi Energy India Ltd. “By expanding our manufacturing presence, we aim to empower local communities, create skilled jobs, and deliver innovative solutions supporting India’s energy and sustainability goals.”

Bruno Melles, CEO of the Transformers Business Unit at Hitachi Energy, said India remains one of the fastest-growing energy markets globally, adding that the new facility will enhance local supply capabilities and support infrastructure development.

Strategic significance

The project is part of Hitachi Energy’s global investment programme aimed at expanding manufacturing capacity, research and development, and engineering capabilities to meet rising global electricity demand.

The company said the investment reinforces its leadership in transformer technology and its commitment to building a secure, affordable, and sustainable energy system.

Recent milestones in India include the commissioning of one of the world’s largest urban HVDC city centre in-feed projects in Mumbai, further strengthening its role in supporting India’s clean energy transition.
