The Indian government has granted Elon Musk's satellite internet venture Starlink a licence to operate in the country, paving the way for broader collaboration in satellite communications to support the Digital India initiative.

Announcing the development on Tuesday, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the licence marks a key step in expanding satellite-based broadband connectivity across the country.

He met with Starlink President and COO Gwynne Shotwell and her team to explore areas of potential cooperation.

"Had a productive meeting with Ms Gwynne Shotwell, President & COO of SpaceX, on India’s next frontier in connectivity. We delved into opportunities for collaboration in satellite communications to power Digital India’s soaring ambitions and empower every citizen across the country," Scindia said in a post on X.

He added that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, satellite technologies were becoming a transformative force in India’s digital revolution.

While reaffirming the government’s commitment to promoting fair competition and improved connectivity, especially in underserved regions, Scindia said, “You fulfill the requirements, and we are ready to welcome you.”

The entry of Starlink, which is now working through the final stages of regulatory clearances, is expected to speed up the rollout of high-speed satellite internet in rural and remote areas.

India’s satellite broadband sector is projected to grow significantly, with estimates indicating it could be worth $1.9 billion by 2030, making the country a major player in the global market.
