India opens new gateway for semiconductor investors — Here’s what it means

The Indian government on Tuesday said it is undertaking concerted efforts to develop a resilient, trusted and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem in the country through a series of strategic initiatives and policy interventions.

Under the Semicon India Programme, the government has so far approved 12 fabrication and packaging projects, along with 24 semiconductor design projects.

In a move aimed at boosting investor confidence and addressing industry concerns, the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) on Tuesday launched an online portal titled “Investors Support”, accessible at https://www.ism.gov.in/investment.

Why it will be helpful?

The portal has been developed to provide investors considering opportunities in India with comprehensive information related to government schemes, policies, approved projects under the Semicon India Programme, regulatory requirements and other key resources.

It will also allow investors to register grievances and raise concerns, which will be addressed by officials of the India Semiconductor Mission in coordination with nodal officers from relevant ministries, departments, organisations, state governments, approved project companies, and national and international trade bodies and associations.

Speaking at the launch event, Amitesh Kumar Sinha, Chief Executive Officer of ISM, underscored the importance of investor facilitation and proactive engagement. He urged representatives of all concerned stakeholders to effectively discharge their responsibilities in resolving investor concerns and further strengthening India’s semiconductor manufacturing and design ecosystem.

The portal will provide stakeholders with a secure, role-based, single-window digital interface to ensure streamlined coordination and the timely resolution of concerns, the government said in a statement.

The launch event also featured an overview and walkthrough of the portal’s framework, functionalities, onboarding process, coordination mechanisms, and the roles and responsibilities of nodal officers from participating ministries, departments, organisations, state governments, approved project companies, and national and international trade bodies and associations.
