India to fund first set of teams building generative AI models: Ashwini Vaishnaw

New Delhi: The first round of funding for teams working on India-specific generative AI models will begin shortly, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Sunday, adding that the evaluation of applications under the IndiaAI mission is nearing completion.

“The evaluation of the AI LLM applications is in its final stages. Within the next few weeks, we will have the first few LLM model teams, which will start getting funding under the mission,” Vaishnaw said on the sidelines of an event in New Delhi on April 7, reported Moneycontrol.

The government is aiming to support the development of indigenous generative AI models within a 10-month timeframe.

It has clarified that the mission will not be limited to large language models (LLMs) but will also include smaller models suited to specific needs.

Vaishnaw also said that there has been a strong response to the second phase of the GPU empanelment process.

“As you know, after the first 14,000 GPUs that we got as a part of the AI mission, the empanelment process for the second tranche is on, and we are getting equally good response, which means that our startup community and AI researchers will get access to a very large GPU compute facility in the coming days,” he said, reported Moneycontrol.

He further added that a wide range of industries have begun developing AI-based applications, with many already receiving recognition under the IndiaAI mission.

“My interaction with education, healthcare, and industrial organisations shows that people are adapting AI in a very big way for multiple uses. So that’s a very positive thing, and that also means we will be able to get the most productive advantage out of this AI revolution,” the minister said, the report added.
