Mumbai, Oct 18 (IBNS): The Indian market ended lower on Wednesday; however, NSE Nifty managed to hold on to its 10,000 mark.

BSE Sensex was down 24.81 points at 32,584.35 and NSE Nifty was down 23.60 points to 10,210.90.

Top gainers on Wednesday were Reliance, Power Grid Corp, Wipro, ONGC, Kotak Mahindra and NTPC while Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Bharti Infratel, Cipla, SBI, Tech Mahindra and Lupin declined.

Diwali is usually a trading holiday on the stock exchanges but both NSE and BSE conduct special trading sessions in the evening, known as Muhurat Trading, to pay respect to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

The Muhurat trading that is conducted on Lakshmi Puja on NSE & BSE is a centuries-old tradition and the day holds significance as it marks the beginning of the new year, as per the Hindu calendar or Samvat 2074 (Year 2017 as per the English calendar), according to media reports.
