Guwahati, Mar 2 (UNI) Assam, the state where oil was discovered and produced for the first time in the country more that a century ago, will have the first Oil Museum in the country.

All major oil and gas PSUs of the country – ONGC, IOCL, HPCL, BPCL and EIL are coming together for this project, which was launched by Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan here yesterday.

“The national oil museum will preserve the history of the oil industry in the country and create awareness among the people about the richness of the industry’s heritage,” Pradhan said.

“It will showcase how technology was used to drill the first oil in Digboi in eastern fringe of Assam and the century-old oil refinery there is still functional,” he added.

Pradhan further hoped that the oil museum will find a prominent place in the tourism map of the country.

The oil museum will be named after KD Malaviya, called the father of India’s hydrocardon industry, and will have all aspects of hydrocarbon industry, starting from formation of hycrocarbon, early history, exploration, production, transportation, refining to customers-end.

To come up at a cost of Rs 104 crore, the museum will have five galleries, auditorium, 3D theatre, outdoor science park etc.

The museum features as an actionable point in the ‘Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for the North East’ and Oil India Ltd will be coordinating the project.
