Kolkata becomes global hotspot! UK Trade Commissioner set to unlock major opportunities under new FTA

| @indiablooms | Dec 09, 2025, at 01:10 pm

Kolkata/IBNS: His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for South Asia, Harjinder Kang, will visit Kolkata on 10–11 December 2025 to engage with key industry stakeholders and reaffirm the United Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening trade and investment ties with West Bengal.

During his visit, Kang will also join industry leaders and representatives at a reception hosted by the British Deputy High Commission Kolkata to celebrate the signing of the UK–India Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The visit underscores Kolkata’s growing strategic importance for UK companies exploring opportunities in East and Northeast India. Kang will meet leaders from sectors such as technology, innovation, advanced manufacturing, and financial services, with discussions focused on boosting bilateral trade and investment—currently valued at over £47 billion annually.

The trip follows UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s October visit to India, accompanied by the largest-ever UK government trade mission.

The landmark UK–India FTA marks a transformative moment in bilateral ties, reducing tariffs on 99% of UK goods and 90% of Indian goods. The agreement is expected to unlock billions in new trade, create greater consumer choice—from Indian textiles and food products to British Scotch whisky and electric vehicles—and open unprecedented market access for businesses on both sides.

Kang will also engage with small and medium-sized enterprises across West Bengal, including those in textiles, agriculture, engineering, jute, tea and handicrafts, offering support through enhanced trade facilitation and information channels.

As part of his Kolkata programme, he will speak at a session hosted by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) on “Unlocking Emerging Trade Opportunities between India & the UK under the upcoming Comprehensive Economic & Trade Agreement (CETA)” on 10 December, where he will be the keynote speaker.

Harjinder Kang said: “The UK–India FTA will turbocharge our trading relationship, driving significant growth and supporting jobs across both countries. Kolkata is a dynamic hub for innovation and industry, with strong UK business presence. I look forward to hearing from business leaders about how we can harness the full benefits of this landmark deal.”

Dr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner to East and Northeast India, added: “We are delighted to welcome the Trade Commissioner to Kolkata for a second visit. Stakeholders across West Bengal are eagerly awaiting the implementation of the UK–India FTA, and there is no better person to outline the scale of the opportunities it brings.”
