Ministry allows Reliance Power to enhance coal production at SPL mines

| | Mar 16, 2016, at 08:52 pm
Mumbai, Mar 16 (IBNS) Reliance Power Limited informed on Wednesday that the Coal Ministry has allowed the company to produce additional coal at its captive mines under Sasan Power Limited (SPL), a wholly owned subsidiary.
The permission allows SPL to produce coal up to 17.20 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) during 2015-16 from its Moher & Moher Amlohri extension coal mines.

This will enable SPL to sustain its power plant operations, which are currently at about 100% plant load factor, which according to the company, is a new benchmark in its very first year of full-scale operations in the Indian power sector.

Plant load factor is a measure of the output of a power plant compared to the maximum output it could produce.

According to the company, the Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) will now be able to generate an additional 2200 million units of electricity, which will benefit a population of 42 crore in seven procuring states (Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Uttarakhand).

Sasan UMPP is located in Sasan village in Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh

The 4000 MW Sasan UMPP is said to be the world's largest integrated power plant and coal mine project and India's first coal-based UMPP.

Moher & Moher Amlohri extension coal mines, the largest captive coal mine in the country in terms of volumes handled, has achieved highest coal production of 16 mtpa and is set to create anew benchmark in coal production among the private sector players, said the company.

In June 2015, the Coal Ministry had directed SPL to limit annual coal production to 16 MTPA.

Based on representations by SPL and its procurers, to permit SPL to produce the requisite coal sufficient to meet the requirement of Sasan UMPP, the ministry gave its permission on Tuesday.
