Nothing, Optiemus to make phones in India, add 1,800 jobs

New Delhi: London-based technology company Nothing announced on Thursday that CMF, earlier a sub-brand, has entered into a joint venture with Optiemus Infracom, which will hold a 65 percent stake.

The partnership will base CMF’s operations, research, and manufacturing in India.

Both firms plan to invest $100 million over the next three years and create more than 1,800 jobs.

A new facility in Noida will serve as a global production and export hub for Nothing and CMF products. According to CMF, Nothing has already invested over $200 million in India.

The plant will have an initial capacity to produce 500,000 phones per month.

While Nothing currently has a 2 percent market share in India and sells around 7 million devices worldwide, the unit will also manufacture phones for other brands.

The project is independent of the government’s production-linked incentive scheme.

Carl Pei, chief executive officer of Nothing, said: “India will play a key role in shaping the future of the global smartphone industry. CMF has been well received by the market since we launched it two years ago. With our end-to-end capabilities, we are uniquely positioned to now build it into India’s first truly global smartphone brand. Our joint venture with Optiemus is a key milestone toward making that vision a reality.”

Optiemus contributes engineering and manufacturing expertise, strengthening India’s standing as a global electronics hub.

Himanshu Tandon has been appointed vice-president of CMF Business to oversee its India-led global operations.

Ashok Gupta, executive chairman of Optiemus, said: “We are extremely excited about this partnership with Nothing; it will allow us to further strengthen our world-class manufacturing capabilities for the products of today and tomorrow."

"This partnership goes beyond high-tech manufacturing — it will empower us to create export-ready products that will be designed in India, showcasing the innovation and talent of our people to the world in the coming years,” he added.
