Number of delayed infrastructure projects increase to 830

New Delhi: The number of delayed infrastructure projects valued at Rs 150 crore and higher in India has increased to 830 as of September 1, 2023, from 809 recorded on August 1, 2023, as per the August 2023 report from the Infrastructure and Project Monitoring Division (IPMD).

Out of the 1,762 projects under scrutiny, 830 are experiencing delays, 550 are progressing on the set schedule, and 43 projects are ahead of schedule.

The remaining 339 projects lack reported commissioning years or tentative gestation periods.

On average, these 830 delayed projects have an overrun of 36.96 months.

Within the delayed projects, 167 have reported additional delays compared to the previous month's completion date, with 59 being high-value mega projects worth Rs 1,000 crore or more.

Furthermore, among the 830 delayed projects, 194 have reported delays ranging from 1-12 months, 190 are facing delays between 13-24 months, 323 are experiencing delays spanning 35-60 months, and the remaining 123 are encountering delays exceeding 60 months.

The total cost overrun for the 1,762 infrastructure projects amounts to Rs 4,77,280.69 crore, which is 19 percent of the total cost.

"Total original cost of implementation of the 1,762 projects was Rs 25,01,400.62 crore and their anticipated completion cost is likely to be Rs 29,78,681.31 crore," the report said.

As of September 1, 2023, a total of Rs 15,57,188.10 crore has been expended on these 1,762 infrastructure projects, the report noted.
