Project ‘Home for one thousand widows’ to be launched at Vrindavan

Mathura/New Delhi, Mar 28 (IBNS) Women & Child Development Minister, Maneka Sanjay Gandhi will launch a project involving construction of a special 'Home for one thousand widows' at Vrindavan, Mathura (Uttar Pradesh) on Tuesday.

The project is part of the ‘Swadhar Greh Scheme’ of the women and child development ministry.

The ministry, under the Swadhar and Short Stay Home Scheme, has been catering to the primary needs of shelter, food, clothing, medical treatment and care of the women in distress who are without social and economic support; the two schemes have been merged as Swadhar Greh  from Jan 1, 2016.

Said to be the largest ever 'Home' for widows established or funded by the government, the 1000-bed facility at Vrindavan is being built as the living condition in the existing Swadhar homes are not satisfactory, according to the ministry.

The Home is being constructed on 1.424 hectare of land by the National Building Construction Corporation at an estimated cost of Rs 57 crores (including cost of the land).

The design of the Home has been prepared in consultation with HelpAge India.

The Home will consist of ground plus three floors with  facilities such as ramp, lifts, electricity, water and other amenities for meeting the requirement of senior citizens and persons with special challenges, said the ministry.
