₹2,000 notes worth ₹6,266 cr still in circulation 2 yrs after withdrawal: RBI
Mumbai: Two years after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 denomination banknotes, currency worth ₹6,266 crore remains in circulation, according to the latest official figures.
The RBI reiterated that the withdrawn notes continue to be valid legal tender.
The central bank had declared the withdrawal of these high-value notes on May 19, 2023, when ₹2,000 notes in circulation totalled ₹3.56 lakh crore.
As of April 30, 2025, 98.24% of those notes have been returned to the banking system.
“Thus, 98.24 per cent of the ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, have since been returned,” the RBI said in a statement.
While the facility to deposit or exchange these notes at bank branches was available until October 7, 2023, individuals can still do so at 19 designated RBI issue offices.
From October 9, 2023, people have also been allowed to deposit ₹2,000 notes at these RBI offices or send them via India Post from any post office for credit into their bank accounts.
