If the pristine beaches of Seychelles are on your travel bucket list, there is excellent news ahead. The island nation is poised to join the growing list of international destinations adopting India’s digital payment infrastructure, allowing Indian tourists to make seamless payments using their existing UPI apps.

The announcement was made by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during a recent press briefing.

"The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Central Bank of Seychelles have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deploy the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Seychelles," Misri said.

Deepening Bilateral Ties

The UPI agreement was part of a broader series of bilateral pacts aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations. Foreign Secretary Misri noted that India and Seychelles also signed an extradition treaty to combat transnational crime, alongside an MoU for cooperation in the peaceful exploration of outer space.

These landmark agreements coincided with a historic diplomatic milestone. At the invitation of Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the 50th Anniversary of Seychelles' Independence as the Guest of Honour—making him the first Indian Prime Minister to do so.

The golden jubilee celebrations also mark 50 years of formal diplomatic ties between India and Seychelles. To commemorate the historic occasion, contingents from the Indian Armed Forces participated in the national Independence Day parade.

Where can you use UPI globally?

Seychelles will soon join a rapidly expanding network of global destinations where UPI is already live or being deployed. Indian travelers can currently use UPI in:

Asia: Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Cambodia

Middle East: UAE, Qatar

Europe & Africa: France, Mauritius
