Kolkata, May 4 (UNI)The fast weakening cyclone Fani proved virtually harmless as it passed through West Bengal and headed towards north-east and Bangladesh early this morning.

Weathermen at the Alipore office said the severe cyclonic storm, which left a trail of disaster in coastal Medinipur and South 24 Parganas, passed through this region without damaging further. However, there had been no report of any casualty or damage so far. They said the damage to property and loss of lives was even less compared to the first norwester which hit the state early last month.

This was possible mainly due to the precautionary measures adopted by the concerned authority.

Aviation services at the Dum Dum airport which had been suspended from 1600 hours on Friday, resumed around 1000 hours this morning.

Train services resumed on Sealdah and Howrah sections. However, ferry services, an important mode of transport in this part of Bengal, remained suspended until further order.

Several south India bound passengers have been left stranded at Howrah station following suspension of many trains.

A report said a dyke at Frazergunj gave in and water gushed into the villages. Durlavpur village in Bankra was also affected by the storms.

Reports of damages came from East Medinipur, West Medinipur, Bankura and South 24 Parganas.

District Magistrate of East Medinipur Partha Ghosh said about 67,000 people from six blocks of

Ramnagar, Contai , Kherjuri and Nandakumar had been shitted on Friday to 75 makeshift camps.

The port town of Haldia in Medinipur was also affected by the storms. Uprooted trees snapped the electrical poles and the town fell into darkness.
