Clinical trials of Russian COVID19 vaccine wrapping up, vaccine safe - Researchers

| @indiablooms | Jul 20, 2020, at 02:29 pm

"The clinical trials of the Russian vaccine against the coronavirus are ending at the Burdenko hospital … Today, on July 20, the second and last group of volunteers comprising 20 people is being released from the military hospital," Borisevich told Krasnaya Zvezda, the official newspaper of the Russian Defense Ministry.

According to Borisevich, there is still a lot of research work ahead, but results are already clear.

"Already today the test data confirms that ,as a result of vaccination, the volunteers produced the necessary antibodies against the coronavirus and the vaccine components are safe," Borisevich said, adding that the antibodies are expected to remain in the human body for a long time.

The second phase of clinical trials of the vaccine is expected to be completed on August 3, according to Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) CEO Kirill Dmitriev.

The Russian coronavirus vaccine is undergoing clinical trials at two institutions: the Burdenko Main Military Clinical Hospital and the Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. The vaccine has two separately injected components that together are expected to provide long-term immunity against the coronavirus.

The second group of volunteers participating in clinical trials at the Sechenov University is expected to be released on Monday. The first group of volunteers at the university was released on July 15.

The Russian coronavirus vaccine could be made available to the public already in mid-August, according to Gamaleya researchers.
