London/IBNS: Amid the deteriorating condition worldwide, experts in the United Kingdom have suggested that treating Coronavirus patients with low doses of the generic steroid drug dexamethasone have been effective in reducing death rates.

According to new trial data published on Tuesday, the drug had reduced death rates by around one-third among those having the most severe conditions due to the infection.

Experts have termed it a 'major breakthrough' in the fight against the deadly virus.

"It cut the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators. For those on oxygen, it cut deaths by a fifth," a BBC report said.

The drug had been a part of experiments to examine if it worked for coronavirus treatments.

Researchers noted that had the drug been used since the inception of the pandemic in the UK, up to 5000 lives could have been saved.

The drug has a huge potentiality to treat patients in poor countries owing to its cheap price and wide availability.

The UK is the fifth worst-hit country globally with nearly 3 lakh cases and about 42,000 deaths.
