Health Canada okays use of naloxone nasal spray for opioid overdose

| | Oct 05, 2016, at 04:47 pm
Toronto, Oct 5 (IBNS): Canada's Health Minister Jane Philpott has authorized the prompt use of non-prescription Naloxone nasal spray to prevent deaths from opioid overdose, according to media reports.

Naloxone is sold under the brand name Narcan.

Health Canada had earlier approved only the injectable version of the drug.

Administration of the nasal spray is easier than the injectable version especially in the absence of trained health-care professionals.

Philpott, therefore, ordered the import of naloxone nasal spray from the US and asked the nasal spray's manufacturer to arrange for the official marketing of the product in Canada.

Health Canada said that until then the U.S.-approved product will be made available in Canada to allow uninterrupted supply.
