Incessant rain causes chaos in Punjab

In Mohali, hundreds of houses were flooded as rainwater seeped in, causing widespread waterlogging across the city. The incessant rain disrupted both rail and road traffic, leaving residents frustrated and stranded.

The situation was no better in Patiala, where a flood-like scenario unfolded as rainwater invaded the homes in the old city area. In response, residents near the Ghaggar River were put on high alert due to the rising water levels.

The impact of the heavy rain extended to the Indo-Pak border, as the Mamdot area in Ferozepur district witnessed damage to its fencing. Additionally, the water level in the Sutlej River surged in Moga and Ferozepur districts.

In Ropar district, train services came to a halt after the deputy commissioner, Dr. Preeti Yadav, issued a high alert. The deluge reached several localities in Nurpur Bedi town and surrounding villages, inundating a significant number of houses.

The flood control room numbers were released by the Ropar administration, as the water levels in all tributaries of the Sutlej, including Swan and Budhki, reached alarming levels.

In a dramatic incident near Machhiwara in Ludhiana, 22 individuals, including 5 women and 4 children, were rescued from the flooded fields where they were working. They had ventured across the river to sow paddy and were stranded when the water level unexpectedly rose. Fortunately, a special boat came to their rescue, ferrying them back to Dhulewal village.

Deputy Commissioner Surabhi Malik has urged residents in the district to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in areas near water bodies and low-lying regions.

According to the weather department, heavy rainfall is expected in the next three hours in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Mansa, Muktsar, Patiala, Sangrur, and Tarn Taran.

The meteorological office has issued warnings of isolated, extremely heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand throughout Sunday. Jammu and Kashmir can also anticipate heavy to very heavy rain in isolated areas until Monday, while eastern Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab may experience such conditions until Sunday.
