Kolkata hosts first ever ESICM examination in India

Kolkata, Apr, 8 (IBNS): European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), in association with the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM), organized the first of its kind examination in the city.

The Joint Workshop of both the organizations initiated the first ever standard exit examination in India for obtaining professional qualification required to get license for practicing intensive care.

The European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine (EDIC) seeks to standardise education and training of quality intensive care across Europe and beyond. EDIC exams are meticulously developed and continuously updated to create standard exit exams, which accurately reflect clearly defined assessment goals and address the necessary skills, attitude, competencies and knowledge required for intensive care practice. Many countries specify EDIC as the professional qualification for practicing in intensive care medicine and the increasing number of participants sitting the exam also attests to its widening acceptance.

Dr. Arindam Kar , Centre Director (Kolkata Centre), Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine, said, “EDIC is one of the standard exit examinations for obtaining professional qualification required to get license for practicing intensive care in many European countries and beyond. A number of students have to visit Europe each year to appear for the examination. Many of them are from India. So we thought, if we could arrange a centre in India, a lot of money and time could be saved for the candidates."

Kar said:  "Eventually we started talking with the representative of ESICM Examination Committee regarding possibility for opening a centre at Kolkata which will be a great benefit for Indian candidates. Initially the ESICM was not in a mood to open a centre at India. In a relentless and continuous effort and liaison with the ESICM and ISCCM, we were finally able to convince the ESICM examination committee to allow us to organize a centre at Kolkata.”
