Kolkata: Maiden green corridor facilitates organ transplant

According to reports, a nearly 18-year-old student Swarnendu Roy, who was being treated in a private hospital in city's Bypass area since Oct 30, was declared brain-dead on Thursday afternoon.

Thereafter his family members decided to donate his organs and asked the administration for a green corridor.

"Swarnendu met an accident on October 30. He went into coma and was under treatment in this hospital's Critical Care Unit (CCU)," a family member told IBNS.
  
"When doctors announced him a brain-dead today, we decided to donate his organs to retain Swarnendu's memories," he further said.

According to hospital reports, his one kidney will be transplanted in the same hospital and his another kidney and liver have been sent to government-run SSKM hospital using Kolkata Police's green corridor, while the 18-year-old's eyes have been dispatched to Disha Eye Hospital in city's adjoining Barrackpore area.

"The main challenge in organ-transplant is to send organs before a particular deadline. Police's green corridor helped a lot in this case," Arijit Ghosh, a Kolkata-based physician told IBNS.

When was asked about green corridor, a senior official of Kolkata Police said, "In such cases, police make shortest way to send organs before given deadline."

"A pilot car escorts the organ-carrier vehicle, while all signals on the route turned green and traffic congestion are cleared," the officer further said.

According to a senior doctor, Kolkata witnessed a green corridor for the first time on Thursday, while arranging green corridor for a successful organ transplant is very common incident in Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Guraon and several other cities.
