Maharashtra: 21,000 people in Palghar evacuated ahead of Cyclone Nisarga's landfall

Palghar/UNI: With the Cyclone Nisarga likely to hit the western coasts of Maharashtra anytime soon, the authorities have evacuated 21,000 villagers from nearly two dozen villages in four talukas of the district to safety.

In an official release issued on Tuesday, collector Dr Kailas Shinde said that as many as 21,080 villagers from total 22 villages in four talukas of Vasai, Palghar, Dahanu and Talasari have been evacuated and shifted to safer places from their kutcha houses.

Since the alert about the cyclone was sounded, the district administration was making every effort to meet the cyclone effectively and keep the damages and losses to the minimum, he said.

He said that those residing in the low-lying areas and kutcha houses have been evacuated by the administration.

He said that the villages to be affected in Vasai taluka are Chandeep, Pachu Bunder (Vasai), Saiwan, Kaman, Sasonavghar, Arnala, Arnala Killa, Rangaon, Satpala, Kalamb, Rajodi and Bhuigaon Budruk, comprising of 12 villages and a population of 12,520.

In Palghar total 5 villages, with a population of 7,000, have been identified and they are Satpati, Jalsarang, Murbe, Uccheli and Dandi.

The 4 villages in the limits of Dahanu, with a population of 1,400, are Dahanu, Narpad, Ambewadi and Chikale.

In Talasari taluka only one village Zai, with 160 people, has been identified.

All the industrial establishments, shops and private establishments in the district will remain closed during this period, the order issued by the collector stated.

The collector has also ordered for a safe shut down of the companies and chemical units.

He has also issued prohibitory orders not only against fishing during this period but also against going or moving around the seashore in the district till June 4.

Those who defy this prohibitory order will be liable for prosecution, the order said.

The District Disaster Management Programme was in place and will be rolled out when necessary, the collector added.
