Maharashtra reports over 10,000 fresh COVID-19 cases amid concern over Delta variant

Mumbai/IBNS: Maharashtra on Tuesday reported 10,066 new COVID-19 cases, which is up from 8,470 cases on Tuesday.

Besides violation of Covid safety norms, the fresh rise in cases has been attributed to a new variant of the Delta strain, causing concern to the government.

On Monday, the Union Health Ministry alerted and advised Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh regarding the Delta Plus variant of COVID-19 being found in some districts in these States.

Union Health Secretary had communicated to these three states this variant has been found in genome sequenced samples from Ratnagiri and Jalgaon Districts of Maharashtra; Palakkad and Pathanamthitta Districts of Kerala; and Bhopal and Shivpuri districts of Madhya Pradesh.

Last week, experts in Maharashtra said the third wave of Covid in the state, which had been the worst in the first two waves of the disease, could arrive earlier than expected.
