Manipal Hospitals launches Robotics Simulation Workshop to train future surgeons

Kolkata/IBNS: Manipal Hospitals has inaugurated its Robotics Simulation Workshop, an initiative aimed at preparing medical professionals for a future where precision, technology and human expertise work increasingly hand in hand.

Professor Dr. Dilip Kumar Pratihar, professor and head of the mechanical engineering department of IIT Kharagpur, said, "During my interaction with the doctors, I gained valuable insights into how robotic systems are being utilised across surgical specialties to assist surgeons with greater accuracy and improved clinical decision-making."

The seminar was not simply about introducing machines, but familiarising surgeons with a discipline that is steadily redefining modern healthcare—one where complex procedures can be performed with greater precision, minimal blood loss and enhanced patient outcomes.

"The integration of robotics and advanced technologies is revolutionising the field of medical science by enhancing precision, efficiency and patient outcomes", added Dr. Pratihar on progressive medical technology.

The modern times' robotic surgical platforms are designed primarily for training and instructional tools. As medical technology continues to evolve, future innovations are expected to include increasingly intelligent robotic simulators, automated systems and more advanced surgical platforms capable of transforming the operating room.

Dr. Sourav Datta, director of Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care, said, "Robotic technology is transforming cancer surgery by enabling greater precision and control during complex procedures. It has improved surgical accuracy in difficult-to-access tumours while helping reduce blood loss, post-operative pain and recovery time."

The event also unveiled the Robotics Simulation Lab displaying systems including Mako, Velys, ROSA and the Da Vinci Xi which demonstrated, along with experts explaining how surgeons guide every movement of the robotic arms through specialised console-based controls.

Scientist and academician, professor Dr. Sushmita Mitra, said, "The future of healthcare lies in the seamless collaboration between medicine and technology. AI and robotics are not here to replace clinicians, but to empower them with greater precision, improved clinical outcomes and faster patient recovery."

The workshop became a meeting point for medicine, technology and academia. Among those present were Dr. Ayanabh Debgupta, Dr. Kunal Sarkar, Dr. Abhay Kumar, Dr. Arunava Roy, Dr. Debkumar Ray, Dr. Abhinibesh Chatterjee, Dr. Vikash Kapoor and several others.

The showcase offered more than a demonstration. Through live surgical simulations, expert-led discussions and hands-on sessions, they were given an opportunity to understand both the capabilities and the possibilities of next-generation robotic surgery.
