Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma tests positive for Covid-19

Shillong/UNI: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced on Friday that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and is in home isolation with mild symptoms of the viral infection.

On the other hand, one more person died due to COVID-19 related complications in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district, taking up the death toll due to the ongoing pandemic to 124, even as 59 new cases of infection mounted the number of active cases to 594 in the State as on Friday.

“I have tested positive for #Covid_19. I am under home isolation and experiencing mild symptoms,” Chief Minister Sangma tweeted.

“I request all those who came in contact with me in the past 5 days to kindly keep a watch on their health and if necessary get tested. Stay safe,” he requested in his micro-blogging site.

The Chief Minister had met Governor Satya Pal Malik on Wednesday at Raj Bhawan here.

He had also held meetings with his cabinet ministers besides government officials and other individuals.

The Chief Minister had tested positive for COVID-19 through TrueNat, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek said.

“The Chief Minister had volunteered for the test after he felt uneasy,” Hek said, adding that the swab samples of the family members of the Chief Minister will also be taken.

The Chief Minister is the seventh legislator from Meghalaya to have tested positive for COVID-19 so far.

Earlier, three Cabinet ministers - Alexander Laloo Hek, James Sangma, Sniawbhalang Dhar, besides two ruling National People’s Party legislators - S.G. Esmatur Mominin and Marcuise N Marak had also tested positive for the viral infection and subsequently recovered.

Recently, Opposition Congress legislator Miani D Shira, the daughter of former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma had also tested positive for COVID-19 following her visit to Delhi and is currently under self-isolation.
