National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority limits price of medical oxygen

New Delhi/IBNS: In order to ensure the availability of medical oxygen at reasonable rates, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has placed a cap on the prices.

The step was taken following complaints of black marketing and hoarding amid increased demand for medical oxygen and oxygen cylinders for rising number of Covid-19 patients.

A Hindustan Times report said demand for medical oxygen multiplied four times from 750 metric tonnes per day to 2,800 metric tonnes daily, bringing under pressure all levels in the value chain of production and supply.

“During COVID, the supply of medical oxygen through cylinders has increased from 10% to around 50% of total consumption. Price regulation at this end is imperative for the continued availability of medical oxygen across the country,” said an official statement, reported HT.

An empowered group at the Centre recommended capping of ex-factory prices of medical oxygen, after which the Centre gave NPPA a free hand to immediately take all necessary steps to regulate the prices and availability.
