London/IBNS: Britain on Wednesday recorded 1,041 new fatalities from the coronavirus.

This is the first time that the daily death count has crossed 1,000 since the pandemic's outbreak in April last year.

As per the latest tally, 77,346 people have now died in the UK within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19.

A record 62,322 new daily cases were recorded.

Meanwhile, the country was also the first in detecting the new mutant strain of coronavirus in September, which is 70 per cent more infectious.

Several countries including India have imposed a travel ban to and from the UK owing to the rapid spread of the new strain of the virus.
