Villagers of Assam's Dima Hasao district convert a wasteland into a green hill
The villagers also engaged to protect wild animals by banning poaching, hunting activities at their areas.
According to the reports, the villagers of Boljang village, some 55 km from Haflong, headquarter of the hills district have been taken a pledge to make a wasteland into a green forest and engaged in conservation of forest, nature.
The gaon burah (village head man) KC Singson said the village is deprived from all rounds of government development.
Boljang, the Kuki tribes dominated village having around 39 houses with 320 inmates situated on Mahur-Laisong road and lacking basic amenities likes drinking water supply, government health care etc.
The village head man said the villagers have taken initiative to convert the wasteland in and around of the village into a green forest to make the village self-sufficient after failing to draw attention of the government and the authorities of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) despites continuous approach for development.
"The villagers have decided to convert the wasteland into a green forest. We are farmers and nature is our mother. We need to protect our nature, environment," KC Singson said.
The villagers started the plantation drive in 2015 and they had already planted over 40,000 saplings including medicinal plants.
They are planned to extend the plantation drive every year by planting 20,000 saplings.
"We hope, after 5-6 years, the village will get huge returns from the green hill forest and it will be used for village development purposes. We hope all rounds development of the village will be started from next five years," Singson said.
With plantation, the villagers also engaged to protect wild animals by banning poaching, hunting activities at their area.
"We had banned poaching, hunting activities in our area and all villagers engaged with it," the village head man said.
The kuki tribes dominated village Boljang is known as Lake Hill in Kuki dialect.
There are many villages in the hilly district, which are still deprived from the government oriented development.
Recently, villagers of another remote village had constructed 6 km long road by their own cost.
