44th Karbi Youth Festival showcases ethnic, traditional cultures at Taralangso

Guwahati, Feb 19 (IBNS): The 44th Karbi Youth Festival (KYF), one of the biggest ethnic festivals of Northeast India, was held at Taralangso in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.

It is a five-day cultural extravaganza

The Karbi Youth Festival is an annual event organised by Karbi Cultural Society (KCS) and this year festival was started on Feb 15.

The Chief Executive Member (CEM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Tuliram Ronghang inaugurated the festival in presence of Executive Members of KAAC and MACs and the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP) of Karbi Anglong.

Over 5000 delegates from 27 zones, cultural troupes from different parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya participated in the festival.

The troupes performed traditional dances, sang traditional Karbi songs and also participated in various cultural competitions.

Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Executive Member Amar Tisso said that, Karbi Youth Festival was started in 1974. Earlier this festival was celebrated in different places, but since 1994 it was centrally organised at Taralangso.

“This festival is an unique festival, where different tribes have showed their cultures in one platform. This festival has been organised in the month of February. During the festival, our traditional cultures have been showed. This festival is not for particularly the Karbi tribes, this festival welcoming all the peoples living in Karbi Anglong and other tribes in the region,” Amar Tisso said.

The festival features national and regional musical entertainment, more than 1 million visitors, over 2000 exhibitors, food vendors, stalls and exhibition, fun shopping and much more.

Cultural troupes of different ethnic tribes and communities with their traditional attire took part in the festival.

Karbi Youth Festival is a celebration of Karbi heritage and culture held on the beautiful and evergreen Taralangso, an area of 1086 'bigha' land near Diphu town as its permanent venue.

Since its inception in 1974, the festivals mission has been to promote and share the culture and heritage of all people of Karbi descent with the global community.
