A fashion show in Kolkata brings to life the LGBTQ community as seen in Indian mythologies

Kolkata, June 30 (IBNS): Indian mythology not only has references to transgender men and women but also integrated them within the framework of society.

Taking a hint from the mythologies, Senco Gold & Diamonds, one of the largest jewellery retail chains of India, presented a fashion show based on these characters, to launch their 'Pride Collection' as a gesture of support for the LGBTQ community.

The fashion show titled 'Sphuling or Freedom of Expression saw participation by a group of transgender men and women led by well-known LGBT activist, Professor Dr Manabi Bandyopadhyay.

Evoking the spirit and memories of the mythological figures, the group represented characters such as Sikhondi (Shankori Mandal), Mohini (Rintu),  Raja Vongashon (Sandipta Chhetri),  Chitrangada (Sayantani Ghosh), Raja Ela (Roma Mandal), Krishna Kali (Pritam Mondol), Brihhonnola (Bikram),and Chandi (Dr. Manabi Bandyopadhyay).

Interestingly, the month of June is celebrated as the “Pride” month across the world to commemorate the Stonewall riots of 1969.

On June 28, 1969, members of the gay community protested violently against a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.

The LGBTQ Pride is a movement against discrimination faced by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community.

Suvankar Sen , Executive  Director, Senco Gold & Diamonds, said “We have launched our Pride Collection in honour of the LGBT community, especially the transgender women on the occasion of Pride month. Many of these women have striven hard to achieve what they have in our  society  despite  the odds stacked against them. We salute them and their indomitable spirits through this fashion show."

The Pride Collection consists of gold and silver pendants named 'Trans Hearty, G-Rex and Less More.

Pride Gold collection price starts from Rs.16,000 and the Silver collection Rs. 500 onwards.

"The Pride Collection, immaculately crafted and designed would appeal to all sections of buyers we cater to with different varieties that we offer from our stable," said Sen.

Professor Dr. Manabi  Bandyopadhyay appreciated the launch of the Pride Collection, the fashion show and the effort of Senco Gold & Diamonds  promoting dignity and equal rights for the LGBTQ community.
