After years of rivalry, Sam Altman says he wants to be friends with Elon Musk

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has waived white flags, urging Elon Musk to be friends with him after years of rivalry and heated exchanges on social media.

It started with Tesla CEO’s reaction to a 2016 post by computer scientist Paul Graham. “Few have done more than Sam Altman to defeat Trump," the original post read, to which the OpenAI CEO commented, “Thank you, Paul."

Musk reshared the post on his X handle, adding cryptic emojis, elicit a response from Altman.

The latter pulled up an old report from The Guardian with the headline “Elon Musk hits back at Trump and says ex-president should hang up his hat," apparently emphasising that they had both criticised Trump in the past.

Altman also added the same in his post. He wrote, “We were both wrong, or at least I certainly was, but that was from 2016, and this was from 2022."

“Anyway, see you next week; let’s be friends. Agi is too important to let a little feud get in the way," he wrote in another comment.

Unlike the past the interaction was friendly and also hinted at a meeting between the old rivals soon.

This is not the first time Elon Mush has brought up an old post by Sam Altman.

Earlier, he reshared a post where Altman said he would never vote for Trump.

Altman, too, has been openly critical of Musk. In April, he called X a “negative platform”.

In response to an X user’s post on the Ghibli trend, which read, “After a long time, I see positivity on X because of people sharing cute images of their family and loved ones. Thanks, Sam,"

Altman took to the comment section and added, “This is generally a quite negative platform, so I am happy we were able to bring some joy temporarily."

Ahead of the US elections this year which saw Donal Trump returning back to power, Elon Musk had turned into one of his close allies. As a result of their close association, Musk was even given the charge of running the US government’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
