American Center Kolkata hosts Global Tiger Day programme

Kolkata, July 31 (IBNS): The need to resolve the man-animal conflict through spread of awareness and judicious initiatives underlined the 'International Tiger Day' programme held at the American Center in Kolkata.

International Tiger Day is celebrated annually on July 29 to raise awareness for tiger conservation.

The objective is to promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.

As per current census figures released on Monday, India is home to 2967 tigers.

The world is home to approximately 4,000 tigers, out of which around 70 per cent reside in India.

The ‘International Tiger Day’ observed at the American Center, Kolkata, included an interactive session titled "Sundarban Tigers: The Road Ahead".

Patti Hoffman, Consul General of the United States of America in Kolkata and Dr. Kailash Chandra, Director, Zoological Survey of India launched 'awareness stickers' to mark the occasion.

Also present on the occasion were Monica Shie, Director, American Center, Kolkata, Dr. Pradeep Vyas, IFS (Retd.), Dr. S. Kulandivel, IFS, Joint Director, Sundarban Biosphere Reserve, West Bengal and Dr. Sujeet Kumar Singh, Tiger Researcher, Zoological Survey of India, Biswajit Roy Chowdhury, Secretary, Nature Environment & Wildlife Society and Editor in Chief, Environ wildlife magazine, Shiladitya Chaudhury, Editor, Environ wildlife magazine, Ajanta Dey, Editor, Environ wildlife magazine and .

Dr. Pradeep Vyas spoke about the present status and future of the mangrove tigers of the Sundarbans,

Dr. S. Kulandivel, IFS spoke on new challenges in conservation and management of Royal Bengal Tigers while Dr. Sujeet Kumar Singh threw light on the conservation genetics of Sundarban Tigers.
