Birmingham, May 24 (IBNS): The University of Birmingham has risen to 13th in the UK university league tables with 18 of its subjects in the top 10 and two rated as the best in the country.

The Guardian University Guide 2017 league table reveals that Birmingham has jumped four places from 17th last year.

The survey evaluates 54 undergraduate subject areas across 119 universities. Birmingham is in the top 10 for 18 of the 42 subject areas for which it is eligible – five more top 10 finishes than last year.

Birmingham is ranked the UK’s top University for American Studies and Drama & Dance, coming in second for physics and third for Philosophy, Biosciences and Chemical Engineering.

The University recorded a top 10 performance in subject areas including Civil Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering, as well as Education, Mathematics and Social Work.

Professor Jeff Bale, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education said: “Our latest league table performances reflect our investment in delivering high-quality and distinctive education by excellent academic staff supported by outstanding professional services."

“We are enhancing the student experience with new student-centred facilities, including a state-of-the-art library and sports centre. As well as our focus on research excellence, we are committed to delivering a first-class experience for our students in every aspect of their university life; from exemplary teaching and sector-leading careers support, to outstanding facilities and a vibrant social life," Bale said.

“These rankings demonstrate our achievements in a highly competitive market and we will continue to build on these great successes to provide our students with an outstanding experience at Birmingham,” the professor added.

The Guardian tables were compiled by the independent consultancy firm Intelligent Metrix, based on information collected by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (Hesa) and the National Student Survey, published by Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce).
