Chetan Bhagat is India's best-selling author, 'Scion of Ikshvaku' by Amish emerges top-selling book of 2015: Report
Mumbai, Dec 29 (IBNS): 'Scion of Ikshvaku' by Amish has emerged as India's top-selling work of fiction of 2015, while Chetan Bhagat is India's best-selling author of 2015, according to #FlipTrends, a year ender report released by Flipkart.
FlipTrends analyzed consumer buying preferences on the Flipkart e-commerce platform between January and December 2015 based on data from 50 million registered customers.
Bengaluru emerged as India’s book capital with the highest number of book lovers in India. The citizens of Bengaluru have lapped up more books than any other city in India. Bengaluru is followed by Delhi NCR and Kolkata. Interestingly, the City of Joy, which does not feature among the top five in other popular categories like mobile and electronics, has stolen a march over cities like Mumbai and Chennai when it comes to reading.
Fiction has thrown up some interesting insights. Book-lovers have voted for Indian authors with a resounding majority. All five best-selling books of 2015 feature Indian authors, while the four of the top five of India’s favorite writers are from India.
Amish Tripathi’s 2015 release The Scion of Ikshvaku leads the pack, with Chetan Bhagat’s 2014 book Half Girlfriend closely following in second place. A surprising part of the best-selling books list is Two Years, Eight Months and Twenty Eight Nights by Salman Rushdie, an author usually regarded as a 'heavier read'.
India’s favourite writers list, according to FlipTrends, is based on total sales in 2015 of all the books written by an author. While Chetan Bhagat leads the way, books by APJ Abdul Kalam found wide readership among book lovers across India. Incidentally, APJ Abdul Kalam’s Reignited - Scientific Pathways to a Better Future, written for young readers, also features among the top five children’s books.
Celebrity authors have also captured the imagination of the India’s book-reading public in a major way. Shilpa Shetty Kundra’s The Great Indian Diet and Twinkle Khanna’s Mrs. Funnybones top the list of five nonfiction books of 2015. Avirook Sen’s Aarushi, on what is arguably India’s most infamous murder case, takes the third position.
