JIS University Kolkata hosts seminar on life and philosophy of Sri Guru Nanak Dev
Kolkata, June 18 (IBNS): In these troubled times, we need to pursue the teachings of Guru Nanak was rightly pointed out at a recent seminar in Kolkata organised by the city-based JIS University, in collaboration with Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.
India is a seat of a rich culture and heritage and also a confluence of major world religions, of which Sikhism is one.
This year has a special significance for all followers of Sikh faith as the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev will be observed in November.
The seminar on 'Life and Philosophy of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji' was dedicated to the birth anniversary celebration and was held on June 15, "which marks the foundation stone laying of Sri Akal Takhat by Sri Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji, in 1606," said Sardar Taranjit Singh, Chancellor, JIS University ,Kolkata.
The seminar was attended by people of many faiths, including Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims.
The panel of speakers included Dr. Roop Singh, Chief Secretary, SGPC, Sri Amritsar Sahib; Dr. Jaspal Singh, former Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala, Sardar Tarlochan Singh, Former Chairman, National Commission for Minorities, Dr. Bimal Chandra Mal, and Prof. Chhanda Chatterjee.
Dr Roop Singh said that Kolkata has a strong contingent of Sikh community and the cultural ties have strengthened over the years.
He also appreciated the release of the Bengali translation of the Holy Granth Sahib at an earlier programme held in Kolkata.
Sardar Jagmohan Sigh Gill, a researcher, pointed out that the ties between Bengal and Punjab extend to many fields.
For example, he said, that Pandit Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar of Bengal, when he was a student in Sanskrit College, learned astronomy under Yogdhyan Misser, who was a Saraswat Brahmim from western Punjab.
Dr. Jaspal Singh said that Rabindranath Tagore was a strong proponent of the Sikh faith and its belief in oneness of God.
Sardar Tarlochan Singh, Former Chairman National Commission for Minority, requested members of Sikh community in Kolkata to spread the message of Guru Nanak Dev Ji through more participation, seminars, book distribution and inviting members of other faiths.
