JKMC, Aloha JK celebrate National Mathematics Day in J&K

According to a statement, the event was held at Foundation World School Humhama.

Students, teachers and other mathematics enthusiast took part in the session.

"The chief guests of the event were Professor Mohammad Amin Sofi who is an internationally renowned mathematician, Professor Bashir Ahmad Zargar, HoD of Mathematics Dept, Kashmir University, Shahbaz Hakbari, an ardent mathematics lover, Abdul Rashid, former principal and Zonal Education officer among others,” the statement said.

The event was initiated with Tilawate-Quran by Vice-chairman Foundation World School, Mubashir Aslam Wafai.

The session was lively and lot of things were discussed pertaining to the subject of mathematics.

Speaking on the occasion Shahbaz Hakbari said, “There is a constant fear among the present generation when it comes to mathematics, and only a few choose this subject by choice. In order to eradicate the fear we need to identify the problem area and rectify it. Teachers also are important in motivating and moulding the children in such a manner that they become passionate learners of the subject.”

Quoting various mathematicians and discussing its inception and importance the general opinion of all the speakers was to have a friendly approach to the subject and stress was also laid on the language it is taught in.

Mathematics is a practical subject, so the concepts should be clear in order to have a better understanding of the matter.

“Math is cumulative in nature, it is a subject which has been predominated by symbols, so a friendly approach from grass-root level is essential. Problem also lies with our teaching methodology as the evaluation criteria followed here is crude which further alienates students from this subject”, said Abdul Rashid, adding that more needs to be done from the basic level so as to achieve the desired results.

Mohammad Amin Sofi, a former professor in the Mathematics Dept. of Kashmir University said that in depth knowledge of the subject is crucial from a teacher’s perspective in order to have a class of ardent learners of mathematics.

Teachers have a very important role to play in order to encourage and influence the learners.

“The transformation should start from elementary level so that by the time a student reaches college and university level he has a command over the subject. It is the teacher’s responsibility to make the subject more lively, interesting, interactive and friendly”, he said.

He further elucidated that deep research and a more humanistic approach toward the subject will make more and more people choose and study the subject.

Mementos and appreciation certificates were also distributed among students, teachers, and others.

The concluding remarks came from Vice-Chairman Foundation World School while thanking all the guests present in the session.

He also stated to take up the initiative to honor the private school teachers every year.
