Jute Story Beyond Bars: A Rakshak Foundation promotion to sell jute products by correctional home inmates

Kolkata, Jul 29 (IBNS): Rakshak Foundation, a social welfare organization in association with the Directorate Of Correctional Services, West Bengal, recently launched the sale of jute products made by the inmates of Correctional Services under the theme 'Jute Story Beyond Bars' at a function in Kolkata.

The sustained campaign  will aim to create global awareness and outreach for a wide array of quality jute products, diligently crafted by inmates at  correctional homes of West Bengal, the organisers said.

Arun Kumar Gupta, IPS, DG, IGP, Correctional Services, Govt. of West Bengal, singer Usha Uthup, artist Wasim Kapoor, former Miss India Ushoshi Sengupta,  actor Shuchandra Vaaniya, Bishop Raju, retired Brigadiare Balbir Singh and many other were present at the function.

Named 'Jute Story Beyond Bars', the initiative has been guided by Chaitali Das, Managing Trustee of the Rakshak Foundation and Charter President of the Rotary Club of Calcutta Millennium.



The initiative provides a platform to the inmates of the prisons in West Bengal to empower their lives through coordinated skill development in artisanal manufacture of jute products.

According to the organisers, the effort is also expected to enhance the usage of jute by emphasizing its inherent sustainability, biodegradable nature and aesthetics. 

Das volunteered to provide vocational training and skill development among the inmates at correctional homes so they they can transform their lives and gain employable skills which shall help them live with dignity. The earnings they are able to muster would help the inmates and also their families, the organisers said.
