Kolkata: School students create street 'alpona' for Saraswati Puja

Kolkata, Feb 9 (IBNS): One thousand students of a Kolkata school selected a stretch of road as their canvas to create colourful street 'alpona' (a Bengali artform attached with several Hindu festivals) as a part of the Saraswati Puja festivity, being observed across West Bengal since Saturday.

Manas Haldar, Principal, Bamanghata High School, located on the eastern outskirts of Kolkata, told IBNS: "1000 students of our school created this wonderful piece of art on a stretch of nearly one kilometre. They worked hard for it and we really appreciated their effort."

Haldar said the main reason behind creating the 'alpona' was that this artwork is slowly disappearing from society and with this initiative the school wanted to show the current generation this particular piece of Bengali artform.

"It is indeed sad that alpona is slowly disappearing from the society. We want the current generation to know about it and hence we took this initiative," he said.

"Moreover, with this task, the people of the region also saw how their kids brilliantly created such a wonderful work of art with their own hands," he said.

He said students of classes six to eleven were involved in the process and the local authority helped them a lot in completing it.

2017: Another attempt with Alpona was seen during Durga Puja:

During Durga Puja celebrations in 2017, several art students had prepared India’s ‘Longest Street Alpona’ for the Samaj Sevi Puja Pandal in South Kolkata.
