The Calcutta Art and Flea Project - Kolkata’s first Zero-Waste Youth Festival
Kolkata/IBNS: To make people aware of the impact of climate change and how to deal with the problem, Kolkata will host for the first time a Zero-Waste Youth Festival in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for Climate Action (UN SDG for Climate Action).
Called The Calcutta Art and Flea Project, the programme aims to spread awareness about eco-friendly products and sustainable practices.
Today, massive enterprises and multinational companies are aiming to make people's lives faster and easier but their policies, often, adopt unsustainable practices, unhealthy working conditions and undisputed labour laws.
According to advocates of sustainable development for climate action, lifestyle choices around food, fashion and music are now crucial to reverse the effects of climate change.
On December 29, at Baitanik (4, Elgin Road, Kolkata – 700020; noon onwards), The Calcutta Art & Flea Project will show how several entrepreneurs, artists and youth of the city are ushering in a change, with their art and business philosophies.
This first of its kind Zero Waste event in the city, will be promoting up-cycling, sustainable and ethical fashion and local musical acts.
One of the acts include a fashion parade showcasing chic up-cycled fashion and accessories.
"Trash into Cash", a collaboration between Earth Day Network and banglanatak dot com will showcase how some creative minds of the city are turning the waste of the city into interesting products.
Trend is a dirty word, said Anna Wintour (British-American journalist and editor) and indeed, it brings about a domino effect.
According to Sayanika Mukherjee, organiser and final year student at NIFT Kolkata,“Trends are responsible for a plethora of negative social, economic and environmental impacts. We are converting fashion into a sustainable cycle and encouraging the youth to shift to up-cycling and slow fashion.”
The Calcutta Art & Flea Project emerged as a platform for people to come together and convert their passion for art into business.
March 2019 saw the very first edition of this project being held at Baitanik, a heritage site belonging to the Tagore family located in Elgin Road, in south Kolkata.
