Workshop on traditional folk music Jhumur to be held in Kolkata

Kolkata, Mar 10 (IBNS): The West Bengal State Akademi of Dance Drama Music and Visual Arts, Rabindra Bharati University, with financial support from the Sangeet Natak Akademi, will hold a 17-day workshop on ‘Traditional Jhumur Songs of Bengal’ from Tuesday.

The workshop will take place from March 14 to March 30, 2017, at Kolkata's famous Jorasanko Thakurbari, house of Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

It will be conducted by Dr. Kankana Mitra, Head of the Department of Vocal Music, Rabindra Bharati University.

Prof. Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury, Vice Chancellor, Rabindra Bharati University, and also the Chairman of the Akademi, will inaugurate the workshop on March 14.

The participants in the workshop will be trained by Jhumur artistes Mihirlal Singhdeo, Bijoy Karmakar, Postobala Debi, Upendranath Mahato, Durjodhan Karmakar and Kiriti Mahato.

Noted researchers on Jhumur songs, Dr. Ashis Giri and Ashok Das, will speak at the workshop.
